In 2019, the University of Maryland created the Nation’s first medical marijuana master’s program. The program combines online learning with face-to-face conferences and is designed for any individual who has completed their undergraduate degree and is interested in pursuing a career in the medical cannabis industry.
The degree in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics addresses the areas of basic science, clinical use, adverse effects and public health, and federal and state laws and policies of medical cannabis. To meet the needs of working professionals, the degree does not require the completion of a thesis paper. Instead, students complete a course that covers a selection of expert seminars, case studies, and discussions. Graduates will be able to assess and dose marijuana to patients. They will also be able to complete research on medical marijuana. Although it is illegal on the federal level, Medical Marijuana was legalized in Pennsylvania in 2016 for a small number of conditions, such as Autism, HIV, and Parkinson’s Disease. The Pennsylvania Government approves new conditions as they see fit. Their most recent approved condition is Anxiety.
What is Medical Marijuana? Medical Marijuana is a legal use of the drug marijuana. It is of much higher quality than the marijuana people buy off of the streets. To be certified to use Medical Marijuana, you must register with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, get a recommendation from an approved doctor, pay fees, and wait for the license to be sent in the mail. Why Use Medical Marijuana? Using medical marijuana reduces the number of symptoms you feel from any medical condition. All we know now is that it does not treat your conditions. Medical Marijuana only helps manage your symptoms. When I asked a friend why she used medical marijuana and how she became interested in the drug, she said, “I heard it could treat anxiety, which I have been struggling with for around 9 years. Medications did not work well for me, so I decided to go with a more natural approach” (Potts). Medical marijuana is a natural approach to managing your symptoms, rather than taking medications that give you unwanted side effects. The Economy Medical marijuana is helping the economy. When the PA Medical Marijuana program first started, Pennsylvania made millions. Dispensaries and patients are required to pay special fees to register with the program. PA made nearly $8 million from marijuana permit applicants in the first year. Growers are required to pay a 5% tax on the products they sell to dispensaries. Keeping the program will increase the number of licensing sales, increasing PA’s revenue from the program. Money from the program is used to help pay for schools and other necessities. Conclusion Medical marijuana is a beneficial medication that can be used to treat symptoms of a number of conditions for those looking for a natural way to treat themselves. Not only is it beneficial for medicine, but it is beneficial to the economy by bringing in millions of dollars every year. COVID-19 affects everyone. There have been lockdowns, closings of businesses, and new CDC regulations regarding social distancing and wearing facemasks. “Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new virus that causes respiratory illness in people and is extremely contagious. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and diarrhea”, according to the Pennsylvania State Department of Health website. Thousands of jobs have been lost and most musicians are a part of this number. Musicians aren’t considered essential employees; therefore, they have lost all sources of income. It is evident that there is not a lot of help, other than the federal stimulus check that will be sent out to Americans soon. Touring and gigging is a major source of income for musicians. With social gatherings of more than 10 people banned, it is impossible for musicians to make money. It is unclear when COVID-19 will end and musicians can tour again. As of now, the music industry is losing money. Music streaming services are reporting that people actually listening to less music during this pandemic. Luckily, many musicians are streaming concerts online. The only downside to this is that they are not making any money from their concerts. I am unsure if there are going to be any more relief options for Americans. For now, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay inside.
